LeanIn.Org|SurveyMonkey poll: Equal pay day 2021

LeanIn.Org|SurveyMonkey poll: Equal pay day 2021

Today is Women's Equal Pay Day. It's on this day that we mark how far into the following year it takes women, on average, to earn what men did last year. 2020 was certainly no exception. In fact, the pandemic continues to highlight the disproportionate impact on women.

According to a new LeanIn.Org|SurveyMonkey poll:

  • Two times the shares of white men, women of color describe the overall impact of the pandemic on their finances as "devastating", with 24% among Black women and 21% among Latinas and Asian women compared to nine percent among white men.
  • Over one-third (37%) of Black women and 32% of Latinas say if they lost their main income source, they would only have a one month safety net to pay for basic necessities (e.g. rent, food); just 21% of men say they would be in the same position.
  • Far more women of color had trouble paying bills in the past year than white men. Fully 39% of Black women, 37% of Latinas, 30% of Asian women had to deal with this hardship compared to 19% of white men.
