A majority of Americans (58%) in the latest NBC News|SurveyMonkey poll do not trust what Donald Trump has said about the coronavirus, including nearly all Democrats and Democratic leaners (93%), two-thirds of independents (66%), and more than one in five (22%) Republicans and GOP leaners. Just 31% of people say they trust the information they are getting from the president about the coronavirus.
By contrast, about half or more of people in the U.S. trust what they have heard about the coronavirus from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (55%), from Anthony Fauci (51%), and from their state’s governor (49%). Fauci and the CDC each are trusted by about twice as many Democrats as Republicans.
By a ten-point margin (54% to 44%), Americans continue to disapprove of President Trump’s handling of the coronavirus, despite the fact that a majority (58%) approve of the way their governors are handling the same crisis.
With the start of the school year just days away, almost one in five parents (18%) say they still don’t know whether their children’s schools will be fully open, fully virtual, or something in-between when classes begin. Nearly four in 10 (38%) say their children’s schools will begin with all learning conducted online, 25% say their children’s schools will have a mixture of online and in-person instruction, and 18% say their schools will reopen fully in-person. Democrats are substantially more likely to report that their children’s school will be conducted virtually (49% vs. 28%), while Republicans are more likely to say their children’s schooling will be fully in-person (28% vs. 10%).
