Nearly twice as many people in the U.S. say businesses in their area are reopening too quickly rather than too slowly (63% vs. 34%), according to a new NBC News|SurveyMonkey poll. The overall numbers mask huge partisan divides: 89% of Democrats and Democratic leaners and 71% of independents say they are more concerned that businesses are reopening too quickly, whereas just 34% of Republicans and GOP leaners say the same. Even among Republicans, the divide persists: 45% of Republicans who identify as moderate or liberal say they are more concerned about reopening too quickly, compared with 29% of conservative or very conservative Republicans.
Despite the number of coronavirus cases increasing in many states and with Florida on Sunday reporting a new single-day record number of cases by any state since the start of the pandemic, state governors continue to have higher approval ratings for their handling of the coronavirus outbreak compared with President Trump.
This week, 59% of people nationwide say they approve of the way their governor is handling their state’s response, nearly unchanged from last week’s 61%. Significantly fewer—43%—approve of the way Trump is handling the federal government’s response.
